Stunning Images Herald Opening of Gemini Observatory's Image Gallery
January 10, 2005
A pair of beautiful images released today in San Diego at the 205th meeting of the American Astronomical Society marks the formal debut of the Gemini Observatory’s Image Gallery.
Scenes of an interacting galaxy pair some 55 million light-years away and a star-forming region in our own galaxy are typical of the more than one hundred images already available on the site. They also present a glimpse of the type and caliber of material the Observatory plans to release in the future.
In addition to breathtaking views of astronomical objects, the site contains downloadable posters, videos, and a wide variety of unique images of the twin telescopes. “Visitors will find this site to be extremely dynamic and a great source of high-quality images and other materials found nowhere else,” said Gemini Graphic Artist Kirk Pu’uohau-Pummill. “It’ll also breath new life into your digital wallpaper collection!”
