Download the latest version of the Gemini IRAF package

Installation instructions for Ureka users

All users are encouraged to use Ureka to install IRAF and the Gemini IRAF package. Version 1.5.1 and 1.5.2 of Ureka contains Gemini IRAF package v1.13 (and a modified version of the 32-bit version of IRAF v2.16 with bug fixes specific to the Gemini IRAF package). If you are planning to use xgterm we recommend that you install 1.5.1 as there is a library conflict issue in 1.5.2. Also, while we do not expect any issues with Ureka 1.5.2 please note that we have tested the package against 1.5.1.

WARNING: The latest version of the Gemini IRAF package is v1.13.1 and it is NOT included in Ureka. This version is required for anyone reducing GMOS-S data obtained with Hamamatsu detectors. In August 2015 work on the video boards was done, and slightly changed the CCD characteristics. This new package version supports both 'flavors' of Hamamatsu. We still strongly recommend everyone else to upgrade to Gemini IRAF v1.13.1. See next section.

Installation instructions for Gemini IRAF

Ureka users (IRAF 2.16), download and install the file gemini_v1131_for_iraf_2.16.tar.gz

Users still using IRAF v2.14, download and install the file gemini_v1131_for_iraf_2.14.tar.gz. Please note that this is likely the last time we distribute an IRAF 2.14 compatible package.

These files are gzipped tar files that contain the source code and binaries for Redhat/CentOS/Fedora and Mac OS X Intel operating systems. Legacy IRAF-style installation instructions are found in the gzipped tar file itself, in the file gemini_readme.txt. However, we now recommend that you follow the installation instructions given below. (Future releases will included these revised instructions.)

  1. Download the tar.gz file you need. (We use the Ureka IRAF 2.16 in this example.)

  2. Unpack the file in a directory of your choice. In this example, we will use mypath/gemini
    1. % mkdir mypath/gemini
    2. % cd mypath/gemini
    3. % tar xvzf gemini_v1131_for_iraf_2.16.tar.gz

  3. Set your IRAF configuration to pick up the new gemini package.
    1. % cd ~/iraf
    2. There should be a file named in there. Make sure the line cl < "home$" is uncommented.
    3. In that same directory, edit or create the file Append the following lines:
      • reset gemini=mypath/gemini/
      • task gemini.pkg=gemini$
      • keep
Make sure the trailing / (slash) is included at the end of the reset path.

  4. Now launch IRAF with pyraf or cl and the newly installed gemini package should be picked up.
