SV Call for Proposals
FLAMINGOS-2, the Gemini near-infrared imager and long-slit and multi-object spectrograph, is undergoing commissioning on the Gemini South telescope. At this time, we invite the Gemini community to propose System Verification (SV) programs for the imaging and long slit spectroscopy modes. We expect to make a separate call for MOS SV observations later this year. Approximately 44 hours are available in the 12A semester. Proposal submissions are due Monday, February 6, 2012, 23:59 UT.
System Verification is the final step of testing prior to general use of the instrument by the Gemini community. It is intended to be "end-to-end" testing, verifying the readiness of the entire system from observation to data reduction (using the Gemini F-2 PyRAF data reduction package). It is also intended to exercise the available modes of the instrument with a variety of observing programs and demonstrate to the community, through interesting and challenging science programs, the potential of FLAMINGOS-2 on Gemini South.
SV proposals will be evaluated by the Gemini F-2 Science Team with input from the Gemini Science and Technology Advisory Committee. Recommended programs will be forwarded to the Gemini Director for approval. Selected proposals will be announced by Friday February 17th, and phase II submissions for imaging and long-slit observations will be due Monday February 27th. Gemini astronomers will assist PIs in completing Phase II. Imaging and long-slit SV will be executed during bright time in March 2012.
It is intended that the SV programs span a wide range of targets and types of observations. The table below presents a grid of different instrument configurations and different types of targets, and the approximate allocation of time for each. The SV programs will be selected to populate all of the categories defined. It is possible for a program to fit more than one category. The allocated hours are notional only and will vary based on the programs selected.

SV teams will be responsible for providing written, in depth assessments of SV observations and mode verification within two months of data acquisition. The data obtained during SV will be made available to the international Gemini community after a two-month proprietary period and the assessments of the PI's team will be published on the Gemini SV web pages. Community participation will help ensure that FLAMINGOS-2 is a success from the first date of scheduled observations in Semester 2012B.
FLAMINGOS-2 is a sensitive NIR imager and spectrograph, operating from 0.9 to 2.4 microns. It has a 6.1 arcminute imaging field of view and a standard YJHK filter set. For spectroscopy, it offers grisms with resolutions ~1200 and ~3000 and a variety of slit widths. See the F-2 web pages for more detailed information, including an integration time calculator.
Please note that:
- Imaging and long slit observations will be executed during bright time in March 2012; targets should have 6<RA<16 hours and declination < 10 degrees.
- The resolving powers in the table are those for the narrowest (2-pixel wide) slits, but wider slits (resulting in lower values of R) may be used.
- Programs for a variety of observing conditions are needed.
- Non-siderial observations will be done guiding with the peripheral wavefront sensor (PWFS2). Note that the PWFS2 probe vignettes some of the F2 FOV.
- Our two narrow band filters (central wavelengths: 1.056 and 1.063 microns) will not be available during this SV call. They might be commissioned at a later date.
- To submit a program, use the 2012A Phase I tool and include observing constraints, target lists, and instrument configuration information. Be sure to click the SV button on the "Submit" page. Submit the proposal BEFORE MIDNIGHT UT ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2012.
- Scientific justifications must be less than 1000 words and must clearly state which modes are being tested. The technical justification should be sufficiently complete within its 1000 word limit that that feasibility can be assessed easily.
- Selection for SV is based in part on the abilities of the proposers to reduce the data and return feedback within a reasonable time. The proposers must include a statement as to their data reduction plans, e.g., in the technical section of the proposal. Proposers may use other data reduction tools in addition to the Gemini package.
- Gemini astronomers will assist PIs in completing Phase II.
