Semester 2021B Time Distribution

Content owned by sleggett

Overview

Time available on each of Gemini North and South is distributed according to the Observatory participants' shares. Engineering time is reserved each semester; this includes engineering time in the queue, instrument performance monitoring, engineering time to accommodate visiting instrumentation, and instrument commissioning. Any unused engineering time is returned to science. The science time includes time used for all Observing Modes, including standard semester programs (this call), Large and Long programs, Fast Turnaround programs, and Director's Discretionary time. Time for limited-term partners is also reserved from the total science time each semester. The estimated time available for each participant and host institution is shown below. The time distribution applies no balancing of partner executed time, and assumes that participants involved in Large and Long Programs take their full 20%.

Gemini North 2021B

  • 33 nights (17.9%) are reserved for engineering, this includes: a 25-night shutdown which will include mirror recoating, engineering time in the queue, instrument performance monitoring, engineering time to accommodate visiting instrumentation, and instrument maintenance tasks.
  • 151.0 nights have been made available for science, which amounts to 82.1% of the total time available.
  • The science time in 2021B also includes:
    • 6.6 nights for DD time,
    • 14.1 nights for host institution (U. of Hawaii),
    • 0.7 nights for Limited Term Partners (Weizmann Institute of Science and Ben-Gurion University),
    • 5.0 nights for the CFHT community, for use of Guaranteed Time in exchange for GRACES,
    • 5.0 nights for the MAROON-X instrument team, for use of Guaranteed Time in exchange for MAROON-X.
  • The Table below shows the distribution of the time available per participant.

Participant Estimated Science Time Available (hours) Time Reserved for Fast Turnaround programs (hours) [A] Time Reserved for Large and Long Programs (hours) [B] Estimated Time Available for this Call (hours) [C]
US 809.5 85.9 144.7 578.9
Canada 214.3 22.7 38.3 153.2
Argentina 36.6 3.9 0 32.7
Brazil 76.9 8.2 0 68.8
Korea 59.0 6.3 0 52.8
Univ. of Hawaii (host) 141.0 14.1 0 126.9

[A] - 10% of the available time is contributed by all participants and the host instituton (University of Hawaii) to the Fast Turnaround program.
[B] - Up to 20% of the available time is contributed by the United States, and Canada, to Large and Long Program.
[C] - As this time also includes weather loss and time lost to faults, approximately 80% of this time is allocated to programs during the ITAC process, distributed across Bands 1, 2 and 3.

Gemini South 2021B

  • 34 nights (18.5%) are reserved for engineering, this includes: a 20-night shutdown which will include mirror recoating, 5 nights for GHOST commissioning, engineering time in the queue, instrument performance monitoring, engineering time to accommodate visiting instrumentation, and instrument maintenance tasks.
  • 150 nights have been made available for science, which amounts to 81.5% of the total time available.
  • The science time also includes:
    • 6.1 nights for DD time,
    • 13.2 nights for host institution (Chile),
    • 0.2 nights for Limited Term Partners (Ben-Gurion University),
    • 4.5 nights for CFHT community, for use of guaranteed time in exchange for GRACES,
    • 9.4 nights for the IGRINS team, for use of guaranteed time in exchange for IGRINS,
    • 4.5 nights of guaranteed time for the NGS2 team.

US 758.4 80.1 136.0 542.6
Canada 200.7 21.2 36.0 143.6
Argentina 34.3 3.6 0 30.7
Brazil 72.1 7.6 0 64.4
Korea 55.3 5.8 0 49.5
Chile (host) 131.6 0 0 131.6

[A] - 10% of the available time is contributed by all participants, not including the host institution (Chile), to the Fast Turnaround program.
